LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) is a 20-character code under the ISO 17442 standard that identifies one company in financial transactions anywhere in the world. It is linked to the legal name, the registration number, the addresses and, where there is one, the parent company, and anyone can look it up in the public GLEIF database.
Regulators introduced it after the 2008 financial crisis so that every party to a financial deal is identified the same way. Since January 2018 an investment firm in the EU may not execute a trade for a company that has no LEI: no LEI, no trade.
An LEI is valid for one year at a time. If it is not renewed, its status becomes lapsed, and banks and brokers treat a lapsed code like a missing one.

Most companies never do. These do, and their bank or broker will ask for it.
Buying bonds, shares, funds or ETFs through a company account at a bank or an online broker. Without an LEI the order is not executed.
Forwards, swaps and options with a bank are derivatives, and EMIR reporting needs the LEI of both sides of the deal.
A company that lists bonds or shares on Nasdaq Riga or First North, or offers them to investors, needs an LEI as the issuer.
Under DORA, banks, insurers and investment firms keep a register of their IT and service suppliers. An EU supplier is listed by its LEI or its EU company number, a supplier from outside the EU only by its LEI, so suppliers get asked for one more and more often.
Investment funds, fund managers, payment and e-money institutions and other supervised firms report under their LEI.
Some foreign banks, trade finance desks and tenders ask for an LEI to check exactly who they are dealing with.

First and last name of a board member listed in the register. If someone else orders, such as an accountant or a lawyer, we need a signed authorisation letter from the company.
Whether another company consolidates your accounts, and which company is at the top. If there is one, we need its legal name, and its LEI if it has one. If the owners are private persons, we simply record that.
