How to register a .lv domain (and the NIC.LV rules)

What .lv domain registration involves

A .lv domain registration is handled through NIC.LV, the official registry for Latvia's country-code zone, run by the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Latvia. You do not have to live in Latvia or run a Latvian company to hold a .lv name; the zone is open to individuals and organisations anywhere. In practice you register through an accredited registrar or reseller, which passes your request and DNS data to NIC.LV.

Step 1: Pick the right zone

Most businesses want a second-level name such as yourbrand.lv. NIC.LV also runs specialised third-level zones:

• .com.lv for commercial use
• .org.lv and .asn.lv for organisations and associations
• .net.lv for network services
• .edu.lv, .conf.lv and .id.lv for education, events and individuals
• .gov.lv and .mil.lv, reserved for state and defence bodies

Names can be up to 63 characters, use letters, digits and hyphens (never at the start or end), and may contain Latvian diacritics as an internationalised domain name (IDN).

Step 2: Check availability

Search at your registrar or query WHOIS directly:

If the record shows "free", the name is available. A "registered" status with hidden contact details is normal: since GDPR took effect, NIC.LV masks the personal data of private registrants in public WHOIS.

Step 3: Prepare registrant data and DNS

You will provide the registrant's legal name, a valid contact address and email, and, for companies, the registration number. Before delegation, NIC.LV checks that the name has at least two working name servers answering for the zone. Set those up first:

If you host DNS with us, we provide the name servers and the zone, and you point the domain at them during registration.

Step 4: Register and confirm

Submit the request through the registrar and choose a term (one year, renewable; multi-year terms are allowed). Once NIC.LV accepts the DNS check, the name is delegated and resolves worldwide, usually within minutes to a few hours.

Renewal, expiry and transfers

Renew before the expiry date. If a .lv name lapses, NIC.LV suspends it and holds it for a grace period during which only the current holder can recover it; after that the name is released back to the public pool. To move a domain between registrars, you keep the same holder and follow NIC.LV's transfer procedure with your current provider, so the registration period and DNS are preserved.

Disputes and trademarks

.lv is allocated on a first-come basis, but NIC.LV operates an alternative dispute resolution procedure for names that clearly infringe a trademark or a right, so registering in bad faith is not a safe strategy.
